What is the Difference Between 4:1 and 2:1 Clear Coats?

This is a frequent question we receive from customers. Both our 4:1 Super Wet Show Clear Coat and 2:1 Super Wet Euro Clear Coat provide excellent shine and long-lasting protection. However, there are key differences you should know before choosing the right clear coat for your project.

The 4:1 Super Wet Show Clear Coat

The 4:1 Super Wet Show Clear Coat is a traditional American clear coat with a mixing ratio of 4 parts clear to 1 part activator.

Key Benefits of 4:1 Clear

  • More user-friendly and lays down smoother when sprayed.

  • Requires less buffing once dry.

  • Cures faster than a 2:1 clear (when using equal hardener speeds).

  • Recommended application: 3 coats.

This option is ideal for those looking for ease of application and faster curing.

The 2:1 Super Wet Euro Clear Coat

The 2:1 Super Wet Euro Clear Coat is designed to mimic European clear coats, mixed at a ratio of 2 parts clear to 1 part activator.

Key Benefits of 2:1 Clear

  • High-solids formula—less is more.

  • Recommended application: 2 coats.

  • If applying more than 2 coats, add at least 10% urethane reducer to prevent solvent pop.

  • Requires a longer cure time before buffing.

  • Once cured, it typically requires more buffing than a 4:1 clear.

This clear is perfect for projects where a thicker, high-solids finish is desired.
