This all started because I bought a a 62 Lincoln for a driver. I searched around for a paint that wasn’t an average paint and ran across several that provided kits. This made the selection easier as everything was pre assembled for me. I chose Auto Paint Hq. because it was in Missouri, my home state. Being 85 years old and having not messed around with auto painting for 25 years, I found the people very helpful. We built a paint booth in my garage and started painting, doing everything as instructed by anybody I could find to give me advice. I used the Candy Pearl Rasberry and it is a very beautiful paint for this car. Everything went well until until we applied the clear coat. We were doing this in mid winter and used a rapid cure catalyst. We had the paint booth too hot and the clear did not flow lik we wanted. Remember we were inexperienced and did not know after the first coat did not flow correctly, we should have quit. We applied 4 coats, knowing we would sand one off. Well it was so rough, we sanded and sanded by hand and really never got a flat surface to buff. I then sanded the surface dow and shot 2 more coats of clear, this time using the Median catalyst. I was disappointed with this application as well. I though about it for a few days and then I remembered, after seeing on TV a man use an orbital sander to level out the finish. I dug out my old Ingersol Rand sander and went after it. 1000, 1500, finishing with 2000 grit and I had a very flat surface. I started buffing with one highly recommended product but it or I was terrible. Started using Mcguire’s and the initial buffing turned out beautiful. I am ready to clean the car up today to buff with the finish coat. I like what I have, but I believe the 2nd application of clear may have darkened it up a little. Still happy. I’m not sure as I am not a painter, but I believe I should have thinned the clear a little if that is possible.
