Make sure your air pressure is set correctly at the gun. Too much pressure can make the product land dry. Too little pressure can create other issues, so the goal is not to guess. Check the product instructions, test your pattern, and adjust before spraying the vehicle.
One of the most useful DIY paint spraying tips is simple: test before committing. A test panel can show whether the product is landing wet enough, whether the fan pattern is even, and whether the reducer speed feels right for the temperature.
Why Prep and Setup Still Matter
Dry spray is often blamed on the final coat, but the setup before spraying matters just as much.
A clean surface, proper sanding, correct masking, dry air supply, and the right tools and equipment all affect the final result. If your air line has moisture issues, your gun is dirty, or your workspace has too much airflow, the finish can suffer even if the product itself is right.
Paint kits generally include mixing cups, stir sticks, and strainers, but they do not include sanding blocks, sandpaper, or body filler. Depending on the project, you may also need masking materials, tack cloths, wax and grease remover, protective gear, spray guns, tools and equipment, and a clean air setup.
The smoother the setup, the better chance the paint has to lay down correctly.
What to Do If Dry Spray Happens
If you notice dry spray while spraying, stop and look at what changed.
Are you too far from the panel? Is the shop too hot? Is the reducer too fast? Is the air pressure too high? Are you moving too quickly? Fix the cause before adding more material.
Do not keep spraying and hope the next coat magically solves it. Sometimes the next coat can help soften minor texture, but heavy dry spray may need to be sanded and corrected after proper drying, depending on the product and stage of the job.
This is where patience saves the paint job. Catch the issue early, adjust your setup, and avoid burying the problem under more coats.
